Chocolate Sour Cream Coffee cake is made-from-scratch baking at its finest. Throw this coffee cake together in an hour, and suddenly you have dessert! Or brunch. Or breakfast. This moist and tender cake is good pretty much any time of the day.
Chocolate Sour Cream Coffee Cake
Did you guys know that coffee cake doesn’t actually include coffee? Turns out a lot of people don’t realize that! It is actually a cake that is meant to be served WITH coffee. Fun times.
I saw this coffee cake over on Ali Ebright’s blog, Gimmie Some Oven. That also happens to be probably the most clever and adorable food blog name I’ve ever come across, so she’s been one of my favorites for quite a while now.
Dessert, or breakfast, or bunch – it just isn’t complete with chocolate, so I decided to change this up a bit and give it a chocolatey twist! I also decided to make it in a high sided cake pan instead of a sheet pan for these reach-for-the-sky pieces. You could also bake it in a bundt pan if you don’t have the right kind of cake pan, or go with a 9×13 as well for a thinner sheet cake.
Are you all prepared for the fall holidays yet? I’m still adjusting to SCHOOL being back on. Its picture day tomorrow, so off to get haircuts we went after school today.
Do you know how not fun it usually is to take the school-aged boys for haircuts?
Then add in three toddlers too, and like whoa. I found a super cute local barber shop about 5 minutes from their school that’s in a little strip mall.
I parked right out front of the door, walked one kid in, went back to the truck. Swapped the next kid into the chair, back to the truck. BONUS. And the barber was AWESOME. We were out of there in like 30 minutes, and their hair looks awesome AND there’s a pizza place next door so I had haircuts and dinner DONE before 5pm. I call that a win.
Hungry for more chocolate? Me too. Check these out while you’re at it!
Homemade Marble Pound Cake
Caramel Filled Brownies
Chewy Chocolate Oatmeal Bars
3 Ingredient Chocolate Cheesecake
Snickers Cake
Almost as big of a win as this coffee cake.
Chocolate Stuffed Sour Cream Coffee Cake
This sweet coffee cake is heavy on the sour cream, and has a delicious chocolate drizzle on top of a cinnamon sugar crust. A surprising chocolate layer at the bottom also adds to the appeal of this fun coffee cake.
Ingredients
Cake
- 1/2 cup salted butter, softened
- 1/2 cup Imperial granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup dark brown Imperial sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract
- 2 cups flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 1/2 cups sour cream
- 2 cups milk chocolate chips, divided
Cinnamon/Sugar Mixture:
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/2 cup dark brown Imperial sugar
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Cream together the butter and sugars until lightened in color and fluffy. Add the eggs, one at a time, and mix well after each addition. Mix in the vanilla. In a separate bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, and baking soda. Whisk together until the flours and leavening agents are incorporated with each other.
- Add the sour cream and flour mixture in alternating amounts, mixing between additions until combined.
- Place 1/2 of batter into a 9" cake pan with high sides (at least 2" inch) that's been prepared with baking spray. Sprinkle 1 1/2 cups chocolate chips over the batter, and then top with the remaining batter and spread over to cover.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the cinnamon and brown sugar, and then sprinkle over the top of the cake.
- Bake for 45-50 minutes, or until a cake tester comes out with moist crumbs.
- To finish cake, melt your remaining chocolate chips over a double boiler or following the package directions and drizzle over the cake.

You're so right - simple and gorgeous. I love coffee cake, definitely more than frosted cakes and almost as much as crumb cake. this one looks so crumbly good too , and with sour cream, it's bound to be incredibly moist.

Thanks, Liz! It was awesome, and totally made it a bit more dessert-worthy than regular coffee cake IMO.
