Our Traeger Grilled Hot Dogs are my favorite way to do quick summer cookouts! Their incredibly smoky flavor and the perfect slight char will quickly make this your favorite hot dog, too. Our method starts with a slow smoke at a low temperature, allowing the smoke flavor to develop, then finishes with a high-heat sear for that classic grilled texture. Whether you’re feeding a crowd or just craving a backyard cookout staple, this simple technique takes ordinary hot dogs to the next level.
Traeger Grilled Hot Dogs
I know what some of you are thinking.
Do people really need a RECIPE for grilled hot dogs?
Probably not. But some of us are brand new to the pellet grill game, and still others really appreciate some clear instructions, even for the easy things, and if I’m here for anything it is to reach people right where they’re at.
I used to be afraid to TURN ON THE GRILL. For real. It took me a while to get comfortable running our pellet smoker, and even though now I can cook just about anything on there, it can be hard at the beginning.
So yes – some people need a recipe, for a hot dog, and that’s okay with me.
These hot dogs are literally the best hot dogs there are. Bold claim, I know, but here we are. You get all of the best parts of the smoking and grilling world in one little tube-shaped sandwich.
The gentle heat + smoke gives the meat a deep, rich, wood-fired flavor, and the final high-heat sear locks in the juices and gives you that little touch of chat that make a grilled hot dog SO good.
We always buy high-quality all-beef hot dogs, but any kind of hot dogs will work. Natural casing. Classic Oscar Meyer. Generic. Whatever.

You can experiment with different wood pellets flavors such as hickory or mesquite for a bolder smoke flavor, or try cherry or apple for a slightly sweet finish.
Why You’ll Love This Dish
- Deep Smoky Flavor – The Traeger’s wood pellets add layers of rich, smoky taste that traditional grilling can’t match.
- Juicy with a Perfect Snap – Slow smoking keeps the hot dogs juicy, while the high-heat finish creates a crisp, caramelized exterior.
- Easy and Hands-Off – Minimal effort with maximum flavor. Just set the temperature and let the grill do the work.
- Customizable – Use different wood pellets, toppings, or even specialty hot dogs to switch things up.

FAQ
Can I make these hot dogs in advance?
Yes, you can smoke the hot dogs ahead of time, then quickly sear them at high heat just before serving to bring back the crispy texture.
How do I store and reheat leftovers?
Store leftover hot dogs in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. To reheat, place them on a hot grill for a few minutes or warm them in the microwave.
What other toppings work well?
Try adding relish, onions, sauerkraut, chili, shredded cheese, or jalapeños for extra flavor. We even add a scoop of our Over The Top Chili sometimes!
What type of wood pellets should I use?
Hickory, cherry, or applewood pellets work great for hot dogs, adding plenty of smoke flavor without overpowering everything. This is also a relatively short smoke period, so it won’t be overwhelming no matter what.
